Pony Room Curriculum

The Pony class curriculum covers four major areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Math and Language.  At the beginning of the school day, lessons are introduced by the teacher from these different areas.  The children are allowed to choose only "work" that has been shown to them.

Practical Life is the first area to be demonstrated to the child.  It is in this area that the child learns control of movement and logical order by using everyday materials.

The next area, the Sensorial area, helps the child learn more about their world through their senses.  By actually manipulating the material, the student can decriminate between long and short, rough and smooth, loud and soft, etc.  This allows their thinking to go from concrete to the abstract, thus facilitating learning.

The Language area starts with the sandpaper letters and proceeds to the moveable alphabet and sounding out words using the short vowel sounds.  By tracing geometric shapes and insets, the child uses the hand movement that will help their writing skills later.

The Math section allows the child to learn through the use of concrete materials.  Starting with the concept of one through five, going all the way up to the teens and tens and into the Golden Beads which introduce the decimal system, the child will learn to equate the number symbol to the actual quantity it represents.

In addition to these areas, we also explore the wonders of science and learn facts about our world through studying geography.  The children use their creative talents in our art area which is supplied with a wide variety of craft materials.

By exposing the child to all areas of learning, the child can develop to the best of their potential, learning in the process the concepts of independence, sense of order and concentration.
